Australijska kultura Aborygenów odwraca do góry nogami nasze zachodnie pojęcie własności ziemi. Dla Aborygenów to ziemia jest właścicielem jednostki. Co więcej, niektóre części krajobrazu wywierają metafizyczny magnetyzm, wciągają człowieka, nawet z dużej odległości. Jest w tym głęboko zakorzeniony transcendentalny obowiązek powrotu. W przeciwnym razie wewnętrzne “ja” usycha i umiera. Walkabout, duchowa podróż Aborygenów na pustyni jest odpowiednikiem pielgrzymki, rytuałem przejścia. Oto mityczna, pradawna kraina Aborygenów, czerwonych piasków, pustynnych ścieżek śpiewu, dziwnych stworzeń, bezkresnych równin, niecodziennej roślinności. Totemiczni Przodkowie nie stwarzali świata zaklęciami, ale poprzez swoje działania. Jednocześnie byli jego częścią. Aborygeni czują się integralną częścią natury, a nie jak większość białych – kimś lepszym od zwierzęcia, rośliny czy skały.
